Web Monetization

A community-led model

The Web Monetization tools for Publishers, Supporters and Developers are no longer being proactively developed by the Interledger Foundation in terms of new features or integrations. We are maintaining all existing tools and they will remain open source and available to use.

The Web Monetization extension itself will continue to exist as a wallet-agnostic browser extension that allows users to support web monetized sites while the native browser implementation continues to be developed.

We are moving to a community-led model and welcome code contributions, including the development of new features. All code will be reviewed by the Interledger Foundation. For more information, review our Get involved page.

The Web Monetization standard will continue to be actively stewarded by the foundation.

Web Monetization is a technology that enables websites to receive payments from visitors as they interact with the content.

Website owners, content owners, and publishers can use Web Monetization to replace or complement existing revenue models.

Site visitors can make a one-time contribution or send continuous payments as they spend time on web monetized content. The amount and frequency of payments is chosen by the visitor, not the website.

For visitors to web monetized content As a content consumer, you pay as much or as little as you want, as often as you want, as you spend time on web monetized sites.

For website owners, content owners, and publishers Get paid directly for the work you own, create, publish, or contribute to on the web.

For developers Get started by adding Web Monetization to an HTML page. Web Monetization can also be added to RSS, ATOM, and JSON feeds, as well as Activity Streams.

Get the browser extension Download Interledger Foundation's browser extension. Currently available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
